Insurers take over liability protection for uninsured Ukrainian cars in Germany

Insurers take over liability protection for uninsured Ukrainian cars in Germany

An obstacle that made it difficult for people from Ukraine to flee to the European Union has been solved: Many refugees were stopped at the Polish border at the weekend, because they do not have valid motor vehicle liability insurance, like the "International Insurance Card for Motor Transport", better known as the "Green Card", or a specially made border insurance. Under normal circumstances driving in Germany without valid insurance cover is not allowed.
But now the problem is solved. In the event of an accident, the German insurers bear the damage and drivers of the Ukrainian car don’t have to fear recourse. The assumption of the damage initially applies until May 31st of this year. The German Green Card Office is responsible for the regulation. The people who are affected by an accident can go there for help after an accident. After an accident, injured parties are protected within the applicable minimum coverage amount. This is EUR 7.5 million for personal injury, EUR 1.22 million for property damage and EUR 50,000 for financial loss.
“In this humanitarian emergency, we want to help Ukrainian refugees to focus on the essentials. Damages caused by uninsured Ukrainian cars are therefore covered by the insurers operating in Germany,” says GDV General Manager Jörg Asmussen.

The Alte Leipziger, a German insurance company, also has a special offer. It allows non-contributory liability and household contents insurance for its customers who host refugees, as well as for the refugees themselves. "This limits financial risks for everyone involved, which could make the decision to take someone in your home easier," the insurance company said on Wednesday. The insured receive an insurance certificate from their intermediary or from customer service, which the refugees can present to the day-care center or school, for example.
