EU regulation concerning car brake lights!

It is well known how important it is for cars to have working lights. It doesn't matter whether it's the headlights, indicators or brake lights – they all need to be in working order.

In Germany, this is laid out in § 53 of the Road Traffic Licencing Regulations (StVZO). Also, every driver is responsible for making sure their brake lights are in good working order to keep our roads safer (§§ 17; 23; 21 Road Traffic Regulations).

The EU regulation (EU) 2019/2144 of 27 November 2019 says that all motor vehicles must be equipped with the advanced vehicle systems mentioned in article 6 of the regulation.

Art. 6 covers intelligent speed assistance, alcohol interlock installation, driver drowsiness and attention warnings, advanced driver distraction warnings, reversing detection, event data recorders and emergency stop signals.

Last named is a light-signalling function that lets other road users behind the vehicle know that a lot of force is being applied to the vehicle in relation to the road conditions. It's there to warn other road users of emergency braking.

It's important to understand why this regulation is in place. The German Association of the Automotive Industry says that around 17% of road accidents are caused by such situations.

The signal is triggered automatically when the vehicle speed exceeds 50 km/h and the brakes are applied strongly or the anti-lock braking system is acticated.
