Marten bite on electric cars

Insurers register around 200000 cases of damage to cars caused by marten bites every year. With conventional combustion engines, such incidents are annoying but can be rectified relatively easily. The cables can be easily replaced. The situation is different with electric cars. In contrast to the combustion engine, the cables are not easy to replace – on the contrary: a marten bite a often a total economic loss. The high-voltage cables used in electric cars cannot simply be replaced. Instead, the entire wiring harness in the car must be replaced, even if only one cable has been bitten. The cost of this work can reach around 7000 euros. This price can quickly exceed the actual value of the car. However, there are a few things that can help to keep the little troublemakers away from the car. For example, dog or cat hair, urine or mothballs and toilet stones can help. However, the little animals are not stupid and quickly realize that there are no other animals nearby the car. Although urine, mothballs and toilet blocks are effective in keeping martens away, the also pose a risk to the car itself. The best method is to use chili. The smell is extremely unpleasant for the animals. However, the spice must be refreshed regularly, as the smell quickly dissipates. It is therefore best to “re-season” after every journey.
