Poland wants to promote transport infrastructure
The EU Council Presidency changes every few months. The purpose of this is to allow the member states to contribute to and directly influence the EU. The aim is to look at political issues from various angles and thus possibly improve them.
From 1 January 2025, the EU Council Presidency will now be held by Poland for 6 months as successor to Hungary. Poland would like to place particular emphasis on transport infrastructure. The Polish Presidency's published programme states that the resilience of the transport sector is to be improved.
Poland wants to focus on expanding the Trans-European Network. The member state would like to ensure that the European states are better connected with each other and that a better connection can be achieved.
Poland would also like to focus on alternative fuels within the aforementioned framework, as well as facilitate cooperation with other countries hoping and waiting to join the EU, in order to open up further options in terms of infrastructure and alternative fuels.
The topic of gigaliners, which was recently taken up by the Institute for European Traffic Law, is one that Poland would also like to consider. Long lorries are a major issue in delivery transport and they are to be increasingly used. Specifications regarding the dimensions and weight of long lorries are to be developed as well as specifications regarding cross-border transport, which Poland already wants to take up with regard to infrastructure.
Just like the issue of technical monitoring of lorries in general, which the EU Commission has been dealing with for some time. Poland would like to use technologies such as artificial intelligence to improve infrastructure and road safety in particular. This trend could be particularly useful in terms of monitoring lorries' journeys, breaks, etc. As soon as the EU Commission has given its opinion, the issue will be taken up by Poland as President of the EU Council.
Possible changes to driving licences should also be included as part of the gigaliners, as the lowering of the minimum age has already been discussed. Poland would like to take this up further.
